Theme:  Born From Spiritual Death

Today’s Devotional emphasizes that Jesus was the first to be born from spiritual death, making it possible for us to share in His righteousness. Through His sacrifice, He triumphed over spiritual death, and now, through confession and faith, we live in the newness of life as partakers of God’s righteousness.

  • Firstborn from the Dead: The phrase “firstborn from the dead” in Colossians 1:18 is often misunderstood. It doesn’t mean that Jesus was the first person to be raised from the dead physically. Before Jesus, there were others who had been raised from the dead. What it truly signifies is that Jesus was the first to be born from spiritual death.
  • Spiritual Death: Spiritual death is a state of separation from God. When Jesus took on the sins of humanity on the Cross, He experienced this spiritual death, being temporarily separated from the Father. This was necessary because, as 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, He was made to be sin for us, even though He knew no sin.
  • Victory over Spiritual Death: Jesus’s descent into spiritual death was not due to His own sins but because He was made the sin sacrifice on our behalf. Through this, He made it possible for humanity to be made righteous. His triumph over Satan and the forces of darkness during His time in the spiritual realm was the ultimate victory.
  • Newness of Life: Jesus’s sacrifice and triumph over spiritual death paved the way for humanity to be born again. Just as He came out of death, we also come out of spiritual death with Him. This rebirth is a newness of life, and it means that believers share in Christ’s righteousness.
  • Confession of Righteousness: Through Jesus’s sacrifice, we are made the expression of God’s righteousness. Confessing this righteousness is essential, and it empowers believers to live in the newness of life in Christ.
